solar water heaters might actually be eligible for a federal tax credit equaling 30 percent of the system’s total cost with no upper limit. The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2016, which President Obama signed into law in late 2015, extended the expiration date of tax credits available for certain energy-saving upgrades that had expired at the end of 2014. A qualifying solar water heater must be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) or other acceptable entity, such as ENERGY STAR®. At least half of the energy generated by the unit must come from the sun and the hot/heated water that it produces must be used inside the tax credit applicant’s primary or secondary dwelling – not in an outdoor swimming pool or hot tub. The tax credit will remain in effect through the year 2021, so to qualify, you must have the solar water heater installed in your home before December 31st of that year. But note: the credit will decrease from 30 percent to 26 percent for tax year 2020, and then decrease again from 26 percent to 22 percent for tax year 2021.
