What’s The Difference Between Central Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps?
New Technology and high-efficiency products can leave homeowners confused about the best choice when it comes to home heating and air conditioning. Two common options are the central air conditioner and the heat pump; and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. In the end, where you live may dictate which works best for your home.
What They Have in Common?
In both systems, the key components are composed of the evaporator, condenser, compressor and liquid refrigerant. They both use the same components to transfer heat from inside the home to the warmer air outside during the summer.
What is Different?
While air conditioners capture heat from within the home to discharge outdoors, their use ends there. Heat pumps are able to reverse the flow of refrigerant and aire, therefore, able to capture heat from the outdoors and transfer it into the home during cold weather.
Who Would Benefit?
Individuals living in a moderate climate who use electric heating can see a drop in the heating bill by as much as 40 percent by using a heat pump. However, the efficiency of a heat pump decreases with lower temperatures and may not be suitable as the only heat source for colder climates.
What is a Mini-Split?
Mini-Split Air conditioning and heat pumps provide individual room temperatures, yet whole-house constant comfort, year round. The systems allow for a peaceful inside environment because components like compressors and motors are installed outdoors. There is little to no ducting and the unit can be mounted directly to the ceiling or a wall.
